A bootcut should look almost straight at a glance. The width arrives quietly below the knee, just enough to clear a boot shaft and balance a fuller hip. Too little and it reads as straight; too much and you've bought a flare.

That's why the length matters as much as the cut. A bootcut hemmed for sneakers rides up the moment you pull on boots, and one hemmed for boots drags behind a flat shoe. Decide which shoes these jeans are for, then measure in them.

The boot rule: measuring your inseam for bootcut

Put on the boots you'll wear with these jeans most often.
Stand straight on a hard floor, feet slightly apart.
Have someone measure from the crotch seam down the inside of your leg.
Stop where you want the hem: at the back, about halfway down the heel.
Enter that number as your inseam and add "measured in boots" in the notes for your tailor.
Boots with an unusually wide shaft? Mention that in the notes too.

When not to choose bootcut

You mostly wear flat sneakers and want a clean, even line.

How should bootcut jeans fit?

Close through the hip and thigh, with the leg widening gently from the knee. The hem should sit over your boot and cover most of the heel without dragging on the ground.

Mid rise or high rise for bootcut?

High rise gives the longest line from waist to hem; mid rise is easier for long days of sitting. Low rise suits anyone who wants the waistband on the hips.

Do bootcut jeans work if I'm petite?
