How to tell if you're a spoon
- Hips more than about 2 inches larger than your bust.
- Waist clearly defined, around 7 inches or more smaller than your hips.
- Measure your high hip, about 3–4 inches below your waist: if it is already much wider than your waist, you have the spoon's shelf.
- Jeans catch at the top of the hip before they reach the seat.
- Rules of thumb, not a diagnosis: most bodies sit between two shapes, and that is completely normal.
What to look for in jeans for a spoon shape
| Feature | Why it works for a spoon | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Room at the high hip | The fullness starts just below the waistband; the top of the jeans must allow it | Tell us your high-hip measurement in the notes for your tailor |
| Waist cut to your waist | So the waistband doesn't gap once the hip fits | Separate waist and hip measurements; see curvy jeans |
| Mid or High rise | Sits above the shelf rather than across it | Choose in the step-by-step builder |
| Leg that opens below the knee | Balances the hip with width at the hem | Bootcut, Flare, Wide Leg |
| Comfort Stretch | A little give across the curve when you sit | Comfort Stretch, 2% elastane |
Three styles that suit a spoon

Bootcut
A steady line from the thigh to a modest kick: the easiest everyday balance for a fuller hip. Bootcut jeans, $109.

Flare
More width at the hem to match the hip. Measure your thigh at the fullest point so it isn't tight before the flare starts. Flare jeans, $119.

Wide Leg
Hangs from the fullest part of the hip, so nothing clings at the shelf. Choose High rise to show the waist. Wide leg jeans, $119.

The second most common shape, and the least catered for
In the NC State study of SizeUSA body-scan data, the spoon was the second most common women's shape after the rectangle, about 15% of women aged 18–25. Most jeans still assume a hip that curves out lower and more gradually.
We take your waist, hips and thigh separately, and you can add the high-hip measurement and where it falls in the notes for your tailor. If anything looks unusual, we email you before cutting.
When another style may suit you better
Low rise jeans sit right on the shelf and tend to roll or dig in; mid or high is kinder.

Very narrow ankles make the hip the widest point; if you love a close leg, the straight is a softer option.
Try Straight instead
From your numbers to your door
Choose a style above and add your measurements in the step-by-step builder: about 5 minutes (how to measure). A pattern maker checks them within 1 working day, then your pair is made in our own workshop in 10–15 working days and covered by the Fit Guarantee: a free remake of your first pair in each fit.

Questions and answers
What is a spoon body shape?
A shape with hips much fuller than the bust, a defined waist and a rounded high hip that starts just below the waistline, like the bowl of a spoon.
What's the difference between a spoon and a pear shape?
Where the curve starts. A spoon's hip flares out high, right below the waist; a pear's widens lower, through the hip and thigh. See jeans for a pear-shaped body.
Why do jeans dig in at my upper hip?
The pattern doesn't allow for a high-hip curve, so the fabric strains just below the waistband. Give us your high-hip measurement in the notes and choose a mid or high rise.
Are wide leg jeans good for a spoon shape?
Yes. A high-rise wide leg sits above the curve and falls straight from the hip, so nothing clings.
