How to find your body shape
- Wear something light, stand relaxed in front of a mirror and keep the tape level and snug, not tight.
- Shoulders: around the widest part of your shoulders, arms by your sides.
- Bust or chest: around the fullest part.
- Waist: at the narrowest point, usually just above your belly button. If there isn't a narrow point, measure at the belly button.
- Hips: around the fullest part of your seat.
- Now compare. Which number is biggest? Is your waist clearly smaller than the numbers above and below it, about the same, or larger?
- Rule of thumb: a difference of about 2 inches or less counts as "about the same". Bodies are rarely textbook, so if you land between two shapes, read both guides.

Shape tells you where jeans need room
Size charts assume one body: hips a set amount bigger than the waist, thighs in step with both. Real bodies don't follow the chart. When researchers at North Carolina State University analyzed 3D body scans of more than 6,300 American women from the SizeUSA survey, about 46% were rectangle shaped, a little over 20% spoon, nearly 14% inverted triangle and only 8% hourglass (NC State, 2006).
That is why the same size fits two people so differently. Knowing your shape tells you which measurement matters most for you: the seat, the thigh, the rise or the waistband.

Body types: ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph
| Body type | What it looks like | Jeans to try | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ectomorph | Lean and narrow, long limbs | Men's Slim or Straight; women's Straight or Barrel | Jeans for an ectomorph |
| Mesomorph | Athletic, broad shoulders, strong thighs, narrower waist | Athletic Taper or Straight; women's Straight or Bootcut | Jeans for a mesomorph |
| Endomorph | Wider, rounder build with a fuller midsection | Relaxed or Straight; women's Straight or Wide Leg | Jeans for an endomorph |
These three come from a framework the psychologist William Sheldon popularized in the 1940s. It's a handy way to describe a build, not a scientific category, and most people are a mix.

We check your numbers before we cut
Copy your best-fitting jeans laid flat (easiest) or measure yourself with a soft tape. Height and weight are optional, as a cross-check.
Within 1 working day a pattern maker compares every measurement with the others and with your height and weight, and emails you before cutting if anything looks unusual.

Questions and answers
How do I find my body shape?
Measure around your shoulders, bust or chest, natural waist and hips, then compare them: which is largest, and is your waist smaller, about the same or larger than the rest? The tables on this page turn that into a shape.
Is rectangle the most common body shape?
In the research we found, yes. NC State's analysis of SizeUSA scans put about 46% of American women in the rectangle group, and a 3D scan survey of more than 12,000 men across India also found rectangle the most common men's shape.
What's the difference between body shape and body type?
Body shape compares the widths of your shoulders, chest, waist and hips. Body type usually means the ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph framework, which describes overall build. Both are only starting points for choosing a fit.
Do I need to know my shape before I order?
No. We cut from your measurements whatever your shape is called. The guides help you choose a style; the measuring guides help you get the numbers right.
What if I'm between two shapes?
That's normal. Read both guides, pick the style they share, and tell us in the notes for your tailor what usually goes wrong with shop-bought jeans.
