The short answer
- Match shoe bulk to hem width: narrow hems with slim shoes, wide hems with substantial ones.
- Bootcut and flare exist for heeled boots; skinny and slim are the only legs that tuck into tall boots.
- Hem every pair for the shoes you'll wear most, measured in those shoes.
- Mixing flats and heels? Hem for the flat, or think about two pairs.
Most "which shoes" advice lists outfits. A more useful rule comes from proportion: the wider the jean at the hem, the more shoe it needs underneath. Real Men Real Style makes the same point for 2026 trousers: match the shoe to the trouser width. Below we've turned that into a matrix using the actual leg openings of our fits, so you can find yours and read across.
Know your leg opening
The leg opening is the circumference of the hem. Here are ours (finished garment, measured around; men on a 32" waist, women on 28"):
| Narrow (under 14") | Middle (14" to 17.5") | Wide (18" and up) |
|---|---|---|
| Women's Skinny 10.5" Men's Skinny 12.5" Mom 13.5" Athletic Taper 13.5" | Men's Slim 14" Barrel 14.5" Women's Straight 15" Men's Straight 16" Men's Relaxed 17.5" | Bootcut 18.5" (men and women) Flare 22" Wide Leg 24" |

Where the hem should land, by shoe
- Sneakers: on narrow legs, at the ankle bone or with one small break; on wider legs, just touching the shoe.
- Boots under the jeans: covering the shaft and resting on the top of the foot, so the boot shows only at the toe and heel.
- Heeled boots with bootcut or flare: covering most of the heel, about ½" off the floor. See our women's Bootcut, men's Bootcut and Flare.
- Loafers: no break or the slightest touch; a little sock or ankle showing is fine.
- Sandals: off the floor, toes visible.
The full method, with measuring in shoes, is in how long should jeans be, and starting inseams by height are in the inseam chart.
One pair, two heights?
Jeans hemmed for a 3" heel will drag in sneakers; jeans hemmed for sneakers look short in heels. Three ways out:
- Hem for the flatter shoe and accept a little ankle in heels. This works best on straight and barrel legs.
- Cuff for the flat days. A single narrow cuff takes up about an inch on straight and slim legs. See how to cuff jeans.
- Two pairs: one hemmed for boots or heels, one for flats. With a made-to-measure pair, add the shoe you'll wear to the notes for your tailor.
Combinations to avoid
- Wide or flare legs with very slim flat shoes: the hem swallows the foot.
- Bootcut over sneakers when the hem is long enough for boots: it drags at the heel.
- Straight or relaxed legs stuffed into tall boots: the fabric bunches above the shaft.
- Chunky sneakers under a 10.5" skinny opening: possible, but the foot looks oversized.

Questions
What shoes go with bootcut jeans?
Boots with a heel, from cowboy boots to heeled ankle boots. Bootcuts are slim to the knee and open at the hem so the boot fits underneath.
What shoes go with straight-leg jeans?
Almost anything: sneakers, loafers, ankle boots and low heels. It's the most flexible leg shape.
Can you wear sneakers with flare jeans?
Yes, with a chunky or platform sneaker and a hem cut for it. Very flat, slim sneakers tend to disappear under a wide flare.
Should jeans touch your shoes?
On most legs, the hem should rest lightly on the shoe with little or no break. Wide legs should just clear the floor; cropped styles end above the ankle.
Which jeans can you tuck into boots?
Narrow legs: skinny and slim. Wider legs bunch inside the boot shaft.
