How to tell if you have an hourglass figure
- Bust and hips within about 1–2 inches of each other.
- Waist roughly 9–10 inches or more smaller than both your bust and your hips.
- Shoulders and hips look about level in the mirror.
- Jeans that fit your hips gap at the back of the waist; jeans that fit your waist won't pass your thighs.
- Rules of thumb, not a diagnosis: most bodies sit between two shapes, and that is completely normal.

Rarer than the size charts suggest
The same NC State study of US body-scan data found that only 8% of women aged 26–55 classed as hourglass, yet the industry sizing standards it examined were shaped around the hourglass across their whole size range. Even so, many hourglass women still fight a waist gap, because a brand's waist-to-hip difference rarely matches their own. The cure is two separate measurements; our page on curvy jeans with no waist gap explains it in detail.
Three styles that suit an hourglass

Skinny
Shows the whole curve from waist to ankle. Choose Comfort or Power Stretch, and measure your hips at the fullest point so the seat fits without pulling. Skinny jeans, $109.

Bootcut
A gentle kick at the hem mirrors the width of your shoulders and keeps the figure balanced head to toe. Measure your inseam in your usual boots. Bootcut jeans, $109.

Flare
A high rise at your waist and a wider hem: the most dramatic version of the hourglass line. Give us your thigh measurement so it stays close to the knee. Flare jeans, $119.
What to look for in jeans for an hourglass figure
| Feature | Why it matters | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Waist cut to your waist | Stops the back of the waistband standing away | Every style; see curvy jeans |
| Mid or High rise | Sits at or near the narrowest point, where an hourglass waist shows best | Skinny, Flare |
| Room in seat and thigh | Curves need room at the hip, not just a bigger waist | Hip and thigh measurements, Regular fit preference |
| Some stretch | Moves with the curve when you sit | Comfort Stretch or Power Stretch |
| Dark, even wash | Lets the cut, not fading, draw the line | Raw Indigo or Dark wash |

What made to measure changes for an hourglass
Waist and hips are cut separately, so the waistband fits the smallest part of you and the seat fits the fullest. The thigh is its own number, so a fitted leg doesn't squeeze. If a bought pair almost works, copy it measured flat and tell us what to change in the notes for your tailor.
When another style may suit you better
Very roomy, straight-hanging jeans can lose your waist; if you love them, wear a high rise.

You want lots of volume in the leg: try a wide leg with a fitted, high waist.
Try Wide Leg instead
From your numbers to your door
Choose a style above and add your measurements in the step-by-step builder: about 5 minutes (how to measure). A pattern maker checks them within 1 working day, then your pair is made in our own workshop in 10–15 working days and covered by the Fit Guarantee: a free remake of your first pair in each fit.

Questions and answers
What jeans look best on an hourglass figure?
Cuts that fit at the waist and follow the hip: skinny, bootcut and flare in a mid or high rise.
Why do jeans gap at the waist on an hourglass figure?
Because your waist is smaller relative to your hips than the pattern assumes. Jeans cut from separate waist and hip measurements remove the gap.
Are skinny jeans good for an hourglass shape?
Yes, as long as the seat and thigh fit; a skinny that's tight at the hip pulls and wrinkles. A little stretch helps.
How common is the hourglass figure?
Less common than people think: an NC State study of US body-scan data put it at 8% of women aged 26–55.
