Anatomy of a barrel

Waist
Fitted, usually high rise. This is what keeps the volume looking intentional.

Thigh and knee
Roomy and rounded: the curve that gives the style its name.

Ankle
Tapers back in, so the leg ends neatly.

Hem
At or just above the ankle bone. It must not pool.

Why one curve doesn't suit every height
A ready-made barrel uses the same curve on a 26" leg and a 34" leg. On a shorter leg it swamps; on a longer one it looks tame. Because we cut the leg to your inseam, hips and thigh, the curve is drawn on your length of leg.
Want it rounder or softer? Say so in the notes for your tailor, and we'll confirm with you before cutting.
It's also why there's no sizing advice on this page. Brands disagree on whether to size up in a barrel; when the jeans are cut to your numbers, the question disappears.
Barrel vs wide leg vs mom
| Barrel | Wide Leg | Mom | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thigh and knee | Roomy and curved | Roomy, falling straight | Relaxed |
| Ankle | Tapers in | Stays wide | Tapers in |
| Hem | Ankle bone | Over the shoe | Ankle bone |
| Best fabric | Classic Rigid | Lightweight to Rigid | Classic Rigid or Comfort Stretch |
| Price | From $119 | From $119 | From $109 |
A wide, straight drop is the Wide Leg; a softer taper is the Mom.

The ankle-bone hem rule
- Measure your inseam to the ankle bone, wearing the shoes you'll pair them with.
- With chunky sneakers, stop a touch higher so the hem clears the shoe.
- Choose Classic Rigid (13 oz, 100% cotton): stretch denim softens the curve.
- Pick High or Ultra High rise to keep the waist defined above the volume.
When not to choose barrel

You want a clean, narrow line under a long coat.
Try Straight instead
You want the hem to fall over boots.
Try Bootcut instead
You want width that swings rather than curves.
Try Wide Leg instead

We check your numbers before we cut
Copy your best-fitting jeans laid flat (easiest) or measure yourself with a soft tape. Height and weight are optional, as a cross-check.
Within 1 working day a pattern maker compares every measurement with the others and with your height and weight, and emails you before cutting if anything looks unusual.

Questions and answers
How should barrel jeans fit?
Snug at the waist, roomy and rounded through the thigh and knee, narrowing at the ankle, with the hem at or just above the ankle bone.
Should I size up in barrel jeans?
There's nothing to size up or down: we cut to your measurements. If you want more volume, choose Roomy as your fit preference or ask in the notes.
Are barrel jeans and horseshoe jeans the same thing?
Yes, two names for the same curved-leg shape. Some brands also call it a balloon leg.
Stretch or rigid denim for barrel jeans?
Rigid. Classic Rigid holds the curve; stretch is available but lets the shape collapse a little.
What shoes go with barrel jeans?
Anything that leaves the ankle visible: loafers, ballet flats, slim sneakers, or a pointed boot under the hem. Very chunky shoes hide the taper.
Do barrel jeans work on a petite or plus figure?
Yes, because the curve is cut on your own leg length and hip. Our petite jeans and plus size jeans pages explain how.
