How to tell if you have a barrel shape
- Bust, waist and hips are close in width, with the waist the same as or a little larger than your hips.
- The torso looks rounded from the side as well as the front.
- Legs are slim compared with your middle; your seat is fairly flat.
- It overlaps with apple and diamond: use whichever page sounds most like you.
- Rules of thumb, not a diagnosis: most bodies sit between two shapes, and that is completely normal.

What made to measure fixes for a barrel shape
The usual problem is a waistband that fits and a seat and thigh that don't, or the other way round. We take waist, hips and thigh as three separate numbers, so a fuller waist doesn't come with baggy legs.
Rise matters too. A barrel shape often needs more length in the front rise than a size gives, so the waistband doesn't tip down at the front. Give us the front and back rise of a pair you like, or describe how the waistband sits in the notes for your tailor.
What to look for in jeans for a barrel shape
| Feature | Why it works | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Waist cut to your waist | Comfortable all day, no rolling or digging | Waist measurement, Regular or Roomy |
| Mid or High rise | Mid sits below the middle; high gives a smooth, supported line | Choose in the step-by-step builder |
| Slim but not tight legs | Shows off slim legs without clinging | Straight, Bootcut |
| Some volume at the hem | Balances a fuller torso | Wide Leg |
| Stretch at the waist | Gives when you sit | Comfort Stretch or Power Stretch |
Three styles that suit a barrel shape

Straight
Clean, even and easy to wear with anything. Measure your thigh so the leg skims. Straight leg jeans, $109.

Bootcut
The small flare balances the torso and works with ankle boots. Measure your inseam in the boots you wear. Bootcut jeans, $109.

Wide Leg
A high rise with a long, fluid leg; the most comfortable choice for sitting. Wide leg jeans, $119.
When another style may suit you better
A very low rise can sit under the midsection and slip when you move.

Super-tight skinny jeans with a rigid waistband are rarely comfortable; if you like a close leg, choose a Straight in a Snug fit with a stretch fabric.
Try Straight instead
From your numbers to your door
Choose a style above and add your measurements in the step-by-step builder: about 5 minutes (how to measure). A pattern maker checks them within 1 working day, then your pair is made in our own workshop in 10–15 working days and covered by the Fit Guarantee: a free remake of your first pair in each fit.

Questions and answers
What is a barrel body shape?
A rounded torso where the bust, waist and hips are similar and the waist is often the fullest point, with slim legs. It's a body shape, not a jean style.
Are barrel jeans good for a barrel body shape?
They can be, but the curved leg adds volume at the knee, which isn't what most barrel shapes are after. A straight, bootcut or wide leg is usually the easier choice.
What's the difference between a barrel and an apple shape?
They overlap. Apple usually describes fullness concentrated in the middle with a fuller bust; barrel is a more even, rounded torso from bust to hip.
What rise should I choose with a fuller waist?
Mid if you'd rather the waistband sit below your middle, high if you want it over and smooth. Tell us how your current jeans sit and we'll check your numbers.
