Are you a triangle? (rules of thumb)
- Your hips measure more than your chest.
- Your shoulders look narrower than your hips in the mirror.
- Your waist is close to your hip measurement, not much smaller.
- Jeans that close at the waist feel tight across the seat when you sit.

Why this shape is hard to buy for
Men's jeans are drafted for a man whose hips are a little bigger than his waist and whose shoulders are wider than both. A triangle build turns that around, so the seat is where most ready-made pairs fall short: the back pockets stretch, the seams pull and the waistband dips when you bend.
The answer isn't a bigger size. It's a seat cut for your hips and a leg that falls straight from them, so the hip line and the hem look in proportion.
Three fits for a triangle build

Straight
Straight leg falls from the hip without narrowing, so the leg matches the seat. Measure your hips at the fullest point, usually across the seat.

Relaxed
Relaxed fit gives extra room in the seat and thigh. Best for sitting all day; measure your thigh at the fullest point, close to the crotch.

Bootcut
Bootcut opens slightly at the hem, which balances wider hips. Good with boots; say which ones in the notes for your tailor.
What to look for in jeans
| Feature | Why it works for a triangle | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Seat | Cut to your hip measurement, so the back doesn't pull or dip | Relaxed |
| Rise | Mid or high keeps the waistband level when you sit | Straight |
| Leg shape | Straight or a slight boot opening balances the hip line | Bootcut |
| Back pockets | Placed for your seat, not stretched across it | Every fit, from your hips |
| Wash | One even wash top to bottom keeps the line simple; save fades and rips for later | Any fit |
When not to choose

Skinny and strong tapers narrow the leg below wide hips and exaggerate the difference. Straight is the comfortable middle ground.
Try Straight insteadHeavy whiskering across the hips draws the eye there; if you want distressing, ripped knees are a better spot.

Questions and answers
What jeans suit a triangle body shape in men?
Straight, relaxed and bootcut legs with a mid or high rise. The key is a seat cut to your hips rather than the size chart's.
Why do my jeans fit at the waist but feel tight at the hips?
Sizes assume a fixed gap between waist and hips. When your hips are fuller than that, the waist fits and the seat doesn't. We cut the two separately.
Is a triangle body shape the same as a pear shape?
It's the men's name for a similar idea: more width at the hips than the shoulders. The jeans advice is similar too: room in the seat and a leg that doesn't narrow sharply.
What's the difference between triangle and inverted trapezoid?
Both carry width low. A triangle has clearly wider hips than shoulders; an inverted trapezoid is milder, with the hips only a little broad for the shoulders.
