You're in good company
A rectangle body shape is the most common one there is. Researchers at NC State ran a US body-scan survey (SizeUSA, about 10,000 people scanned in 2003) through a shape-classification tool and found the rectangle more common than any other women's shape; among women aged 18–25, over half were rectangles.
So if jeans rarely look like the photo, it isn't you. A lot of sizing is drafted with a much smaller waist in mind, and the extra room has to go somewhere, usually the back of your waistband.

How to tell if you're a rectangle
- Measure bust, waist and hips (the fullest part of your seat) with the tape level and snug, not tight.
- Bust and hips within about 3 inches of each other.
- Waist less than about 9 inches smaller than your bust or hips; your waist reads as gently defined rather than nipped in.
- Shoulders roughly in line with your hips when you look in the mirror.
- Jeans that fit your hips often fit your waist too, but leave the seat looking flat.
- Rules of thumb, not a diagnosis: most bodies sit between two shapes, and that is completely normal.
What to look for in jeans when you're a rectangle
| Feature | Why it works for a rectangle | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| High or Ultra High rise | Marks a waistline and gives a longer leg line | Mom jeans, Flare |
| Shape in the leg | A flare or a curve adds the outline your frame doesn't provide on its own | Flare, Barrel |
| A fitted seat | A seat cut to your actual hip, not a generic curve, keeps the back neat instead of baggy | Every style: give us your hip measurement at the fullest point |
| Back pockets and details | Contrast thread or whiskering adds interest at the hip | Contrast white thread, light whiskering (+$10) |
| Rigid or stretch | Classic Rigid holds a structured leg; Comfort Stretch feels softer | Choose in the step-by-step builder |
Three styles that suit a rectangle

Flare
Close through the hip and thigh, then a kick from the knee that adds movement and balance. Measure your inseam in the shoes you'll wear most. Flare jeans, $119.

Barrel
The curved leg puts volume at the knee, which gives a straight frame a sculpted outline. Choose a High rise and your usual fit preference. Barrel jeans, $119.

Mom
High waist, roomy seat and a taper to the ankle: shape from the waistband down. Add your thigh measurement so the taper starts in the right place. Mom jeans, $109.

What made to measure fixes that sizes can't
Sizes assume a waist-to-hip difference. If yours is smaller, you size down for the waist and the seat goes tight, or size up and the waist sits loose. We cut waist and hips from separate measurements, take the thigh as its own number, and let you choose the rise, so a high waist actually sits at your waist.
When another style may suit you better

You prefer a plain, even leg with no extra volume: the straight is a calm everyday choice.
Try Straight instead
You want a very close fit from hip to ankle; skinny works, it just adds less shape.
Try Skinny instead
From your numbers to your door
Choose a style above and add your measurements in the step-by-step builder: about 5 minutes (how to measure). A pattern maker checks them within 1 working day, then your pair is made in our own workshop in 10–15 working days and covered by the Fit Guarantee: a free remake of your first pair in each fit.

Questions and answers
Is rectangle the most common body shape?
In US body-scan research, yes. An NC State study of SizeUSA data found the rectangle the most common women's shape, ahead of spoon, inverted triangle and hourglass.
What jeans suit a rectangle body shape?
Styles that add shape below the waist: flare, barrel and mom jeans, usually in a high rise. A straight leg works too if you prefer a simpler line.
Do high-waisted jeans work if I don't have a defined waist?
Yes. A high rise sits at your natural waist and gives the outfit a waistline. It only fails when the waistband is cut for a smaller waist, which is why we cut it to yours.
Is a rectangle body shape the same as a straight or banana shape?
Yes, those are other names for the same thing: bust, waist and hips close in width.
