Why Jeans Gap at the Back, and What Actually Fixes It

The short answer

  • Store sizes assume a set difference between waist and hips. If your hips are bigger relative to your waist than that, the waistband stands off your back.
  • It happens with curvy hips, with muscular glutes and thighs, and when the back rise is too short or too long for you.
  • A belt or a tailor's take-in helps a small gap. A big gap needs the waist and hips cut to separate measurements.

You buy jeans that fit your hips and thighs, sit down, and there it is: a gap at the back of the waist big enough to fit a hand into. It isn't your body doing something wrong. It's a size system built for a different shape.

Why it happens

Sizes move the waist and hips together

A store pattern is drafted for one body and then scaled up and down into sizes. As the size goes up, waist and hips grow together by fixed steps. If the difference between your waist and hips is bigger than the pattern assumes, you have to pick a size for your hips, and the waist is left too big.

It isn't only about curves

  • Muscular glutes and thighs. Lifters, cyclists and athletes get the same gap: the size that fits the seat and thighs is too big at the waist. See jeans for big thighs.
  • The back rise. If the back of the jeans is too short for your seat, the waistband pulls down and away when you sit. Too long and it bags above the seat.
  • Stretch that relaxes. Stretch denim gives a little during the day, so a waistband that's only just snug in the morning can gap by evening.

A 2-minute self-test

  1. Measure your waist where you wear your waistband, and your hips at the fullest point with feet together.
  2. Note the difference. The bigger it is, the more likely store sizes will gap for you.
  3. Put on your best jeans, sit on a hard chair and slide your fingers into the back waistband. More than two fingers is a gap worth fixing.
  4. Check whether the gap is there standing up, or only when you sit. Only when sitting points to the back rise.

How we cut out the gap

At Jeanszilla the waist is cut to your waist measurement and the hips to your hip measurement, separately. You can add the back rise of a pair that sits right, and describe the problem in the notes for your tailor (for example "gaps about 2 inches at the back when I sit"). A pattern maker checks your numbers within 1 working day before cutting.

Questions

Why do my jeans fit my hips but not my waist?

Store sizes grow the waist and hips together by set amounts. If your hips are larger relative to your waist than the pattern assumes, a size that fits your hips is too big at the waist.

Can a tailor fix a waist gap in jeans?

Usually, if the gap is small: they take in the back waist. A large take-in can distort the back pockets and yoke, so big gaps are better solved with a different cut.

Do high-waisted jeans gap less?

Often, because the waistband sits where your body is narrower and the back rise is longer. They don't fix a large waist-to-hip difference on their own.

Why do my jeans gap only when I sit?

That usually means the back rise is too short for your seat, so the waistband is pulled down and away when you bend.

Do men get a back gap in jeans too?

Yes, especially men with muscular glutes and thighs. The size that fits the seat and thighs is too big at the waist.
