Why jeans that fit your thighs never fit your waist

Ready-made jeans are graded from the waist. Each waist size comes with a thigh someone decided it should have, and even athletic ranges are built around an average athlete. If your quads are bigger than that average, you size up for your legs and end up with a waistband you could fit a fist into.

Our pattern has no average in it. Waist, seat and thigh are three separate numbers, and each one is cut to you.

      Find your symptom

      • Gap at the back of the waistband

You sized up so your thighs would fit

Waist cut to your waist measurement, thigh cut to your thigh

      • Strain lines across the front of the thigh

The thigh is too narrow for your quads

Your fullest-thigh measurement plus ease for the fabric; Power Stretch for the most give

      • Denim thinning at the inner thigh

The fabric is stretched tight where your thighs meet

Thigh room from your own number; Classic Rigid 13 oz if you want a sturdier cloth

      • Baggy below the knee

Sizing up widened the whole leg

A taper from the knee to your ankle, or a straight leg cut to your size

      • Waistband drags down when you squat

The seat is too small, so it pulls the back down

Seat measured separately; choose Regular or Roomy

Which rise works with big thighs

A mid or high rise usually works best. A deeper front and back rise gives the seat and thighs room without the waistband sliding down when you squat or sit, and a high rise keeps it level across the back.

Low rise puts the widest part of the seat and thighs closer to the waistband, which is where gaps and pulling start. If you have a pair whose rise sits right, add its front and back rise to your order.

Stretch helps too: Comfort Stretch has 2% elastane and Power Stretch 4%, so the thigh moves with you while the cut does the real work. See stretch vs rigid denim.

Why "athletic fit" off the rack still gaps

Athletic-fit jeans in stores add room through the seat and thigh, but they still grade every measurement from one size. A 32 waist gets the thigh the brand chose for a 32, so if your legs are bigger than that the thighs pull, and if you size up for the thighs the waist gaps.

We take your waist, seat, thigh and inseam as separate numbers, so one doesn't decide the others. Our Athletic Taper keeps that room through the thigh and narrows below the knee; the Straight keeps it all the way down.

      Measuring checklist for big thighs

      1. Thigh: at the fullest point, just below the crotch, tape level, snug but not tight.
      2. Measure both legs and give us the bigger number.
      3. Waist: where you want the waistband to sit, not where your current jeans have slipped to.
      4. Seat: around the fullest part, feet together.
      5. Copying jeans? Take the waist from a pair that fits there and the thigh from one that fits there, and say which is which in the notes for your tailor.
      6. Squat, cycle or take stairs two at a time? Choose Power Stretch (10 oz, 4% elastane).

The movement test when they arrive

      1. Sit down and stand up: the back of the waistband stays put.
      2. Drop into a deep squat: no pull across the seat or knees.
      3. Stand still and look for strain lines across the front of the thigh.
      4. Something off? Tell us within 30 days of delivery, while they're still unworn and unwashed, for a free remake or up to $25 towards a local alteration.

Where to measure for big thighs

Tap a number. A soft tape and five minutes is all it takes. Full method in the measuring guide.

      2. Seat Around the fullest part of your seat, feet together.
      3. Thigh Around the fullest part of one thigh, just below the crotch.
      4. Inseam From the crotch down the inside leg to where you want the hem, in the shoes you'll wear.

We check your numbers before we cut

Copy your best-fitting jeans laid flat (easiest) or measure yourself with a soft tape. Height and weight are optional, as a cross-check.

Within 1 working day a pattern maker compares every measurement with the others and with your height and weight, and emails you before cutting if anything looks unusual.

      Questions and answers

Why do my jeans fit my thighs but gap at the waist?

Because ready-made sizes link the thigh to the waist. Thighs bigger than the chart expects force you to size up, and the bigger waist comes with it.

Should I size up and have the waist taken in?

You can, but taking in the waist doesn't fix the baggy lower leg, and it's another tailor visit. Cutting from your measurements avoids both.

Which fit is best for big thighs?

Athletic Taper if you want a narrower ankle, Relaxed if you want a straight leg. Both give the seat and thighs room.

Will they rip when I squat?

We won't call any denim rip-proof. What helps most is seat and thigh room cut to your numbers, plus Power Stretch, which has the most elastane in our range.

I have big thighs and short legs. Can you handle both?

Yes. The inseam is cut to your number as well; jeans for shorter men covers the length side. Our measuring guides show how to take both.
