Back-to-School Jeans: When to Order, What to Choose

The short answer

  • Order at least 5 weeks before school starts: 10–15 working days to make plus 3–7 working days' express delivery is roughly 3 to 4½ weeks.
  • Short on time? Rush production (5–7 working days, +$35) cuts that to about 2 to 3 weeks.
  • For a hard-wearing school pair: reinforced knees (+$10), a grow-room hem (+$8), and a name label (+$8).
  • Measure the week you order, not in June for an August order.

Back-to-school shopping usually happens in a rush the week before term. Made-to-measure jeans don't work that way: they're cut after you order, so the trick is to put a date in the diary. Here's the timeline, then the choices that matter for a pair that has to survive playgrounds, PE changes and a growth spurt.

Count back from the first day

US school start dates vary a lot by district, from late July to after Labor Day, so start with your own date. Then count back in working days (Monday to Friday; public holidays such as the Fourth of July don't count).

Our sums add the longest and shortest of each step; your order may land anywhere in the range. The day-by-day version is in what happens after you order.

So for a school that starts on a Monday in mid-August, ordering in the first days of July gives you comfortable room, even with the holiday. Ordering five weeks out is the minimum we'd plan around without rush.

How many pairs?

For a child who wears jeans most days, two or three pairs is a common rotation: one on, one in the wash, one spare for the day something gets spilled. If you're buying for siblings, it adds up quickly: four pairs at $79 is $316, which is over the $299 free express shipping threshold.

Choices that earn their keep over a school year

Reinforced knees+$10Your child kneels, crawls, slides or plays on the floor a lot
Grow-room hem (1.5" sewn inside)+$8The pair needs to last the whole year; see how it works
Name label inside+$8PE changes, sleepovers, lost property
Adjustable button-elastic waistbandWaistband choiceTheir waist changes faster than their length, or they're between numbers

If knees are the usual casualty in your house, reinforced knees are the extra we'd prioritize. For patching a pair that's already gone, see how to repair holes in jeans.

Lighter washes show less fade at the knees over time.

Back-to-school measuring checklist

  • Measure the week you order: height, waist, hips, inseam, plus age and weight.
  • Measure the inseam from a pair of trousers that fits now, laid flat.
  • Note which shoes they'll wear most (sneakers or boots change where the hem lands).
  • Write anything they dislike in the notes for your tailor: "hates tight waistbands", "always tears the left knee".
  • For several children, label each set of numbers with the child's name before you start.

When not to order made-to-measure for school

If school starts in under two weeks, even rush won't reliably make it; buy a stopgap pair and order properly for later in the term. And if your child is mid growth spurt and you plan to buy again in three months, keep it to one pair now.

Questions

How early should I order back-to-school jeans?

At least five weeks before the first day for standard production, or about three weeks with rush. Earlier is calmer.

Do reinforced knees make jeans stiff?

There's an extra layer at the knee, so they feel a little more substantial there. Most of the leg is unchanged.

Can I order several children's jeans in one order?

Yes. Each pair is made to its own measurements, and orders over $299 get free express shipping.

What if they don't fit?

Your first pair in each fit is covered by our Fit Guarantee: tell us within 30 days of delivery, unworn and unwashed, and we'll remake it or refund up to $25 for a local alteration.
