The short answer
- For women: no longer the default, but very much an option. Several 2026 reports describe a grown-up skinny or cigarette leg returning.
- For men: 2026 menswear coverage calls skinny dated; a slim leg gives a similar line without the squeeze.
- Wear it now with a high or mid rise, a clean dark or black wash and an ankle-length hem.
- The best reason to wear skinny jeans is boots. That never went out.
Short answer: skinny jeans are no longer what everyone wears, and that's the best thing that could happen to them. Without the pressure of being the default, they've become one choice among many, and 2026 coverage is split on how much of a comeback they're making. This is an opinion piece, so here's the evidence first and our view after.
What 2026 sources say
| Source | What it reports |
|---|---|
| Grazia, fall 2026 runways | Skinny jeans listed first among six runway trends, styled sleek with sharp heels rather than flats |
| Refinery29 Australia | A comeback for slim cuts, reworked as a skinny-straight hybrid such as the cigarette jean |
| Grazia, 2026 trends | The stovepipe: snug at the waist with more room through the leg than a skinny |
| YouLookFab | Skinnies remain, but with high rises; no low-rise skinnies |
| Refinery29 US | Tight, figure-hugging fits are giving way to roomier shapes, though skinny-ish straight and cigarette styles stay current |
| Real Men Real Style | Skinny trousers described as outdated for adult men; slim still fine |
The pattern: for women, a slim, clean leg is back in the conversation, often a little less tight than the 2015 version. For men, the advice is consistent that slim beats skinny.
Our honest take for women
If you like how you look in skinny jeans, wear them. They're the easiest leg under a long coat, the only one that sits flat inside tall boots, and they balance a big sweater better than anything else. What dates them is the styling, not the leg:
- Rise: mid, high or ultra high. A low-rise skinny is the one combination nobody is reporting as current.
- Wash: black, dark or raw indigo looks newer than a heavily faded mid blue with whiskering.
- Length: ending at the ankle bone, or tucked into boots. A skinny that bunches in rings above the shoe looks tired.
- Tops: volume up top (big knit, oversized blazer, long coat). Skinny with a tight top is the look that feels most 2012.
Our women's Skinny measures 19" at the thigh, 12.5" at the knee and 10.5" at the opening on a 28" waist, with rises from Low to Ultra High. If you want the cigarette or stovepipe look the reports describe, our Straight (15" opening) is closer than the Skinny.

Our honest take for men
We still make a men's Skinny, and some people should wear it: very slim builds for whom a slim fit still looks loose, and anyone who plays in a band. For most men, though, the 2026 advice and our numbers agree: move one step to Slim.
| Men's fit (32" waist) | Thigh | Knee | Opening | Feels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skinny | 21" | 14" | 12.5" | Close all the way down |
| Slim | 22.5" | 15.5" | 14" | Trim, gentle taper below the knee |
| Athletic Taper | 25" | 16" | 13.5" | Full thigh, slim ankle |
Notice the Athletic Taper's opening is narrower than the Slim's. If you wore skinny jeans because you liked a narrow ankle but they always strangled your thighs, that's your fit. More in men's jeans trends 2026.
Skinny vs too tight
A skinny jean should be close, not painful. If you see drag lines from the crotch, the pockets flare open or you can't sit comfortably, the pair is too small, not too skinny. The checklist in signs your jeans are too tight helps, and stretch vs rigid denim explains why most skinny jeans need some elastane: our Comfort Stretch (2%) or Power Stretch (4%).
When to retire the skinnies
When they've stretched so the knees bag by lunchtime, when the black has turned charcoal and won't come back, or when you only reach for them out of habit. Then it's time for a new shape, or a new pair of the same one.
Or the men's Skinny.
Questions
Are skinny jeans out of style in 2026?
Not out, but no longer the default. Some 2026 reports, such as Grazia's fall runway coverage, describe a skinny comeback; others see a slim or cigarette leg replacing it.
What jeans replaced skinny jeans?
Straight, wide, barrel and relaxed legs took over as the everyday shapes. For a close fit, slim-straight and cigarette jeans are the reported middle ground.
Can men still wear skinny jeans?
Yes, but 2026 menswear coverage calls skinny dated. A slim fit gives a similar clean line with more room.
How do you make skinny jeans look modern?
Go for a mid or high rise, a dark or black wash, a hem at the ankle or tucked into boots, and volume on top.
