Rigid, stretch or selvedge? Choose the denim first
| Denim | What it's like | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Rigid, 13 oz, 100% cotton | Firm at first, softens and shapes to you over time | You want a traditional pair you break in |
| Comfort Stretch, 11 oz, 2% elastane | Comfortable from the first day | You sit a lot or don't want a break-in |
| Power Stretch, 10 oz, 4% elastane | The most give of the range | You have strong legs or an active day |
| Summer Lightweight, 8.5 oz | Light and airy | You live somewhere hot |
| Japanese-style Selvedge, 14 oz raw (+$40) | Heavy, unwashed and stiff for the first weeks | You want fades that record how you wear them |
Raw denim can shrink when it's first soaked or washed. If you plan to soak your selvedge pair, say so in the notes for your tailor.
Slim vs straight vs relaxed
| Slim | Straight | Relaxed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat | Trim | Clean | Roomy |
| Thigh | Trim | Easy | Roomy |
| Below the knee | Narrows | Stays the same width | Stays straight, a little wider |
| Best with | Sneakers, Chelsea boots | Almost anything, work boots included | Boots, chunky trainers |

Choose your break, then measure for it
| Break | How it looks | How to measure |
|---|---|---|
| No break | The hem just meets the shoe; clean, and ideal for cuffs | Shoes on, to the top of the shoe |
| Slight break | One soft fold at the front | Shoes on, a little past the top of the shoe |
| Full break | The fabric rests on the shoe and folds | Shoes on, almost to the heel; good with boots |

Hems, fly and the first-pair rule
A straight leg shows off its hem. Choose regular, raw and frayed, cuffed, or chain-stitch (+$10), add a button fly (+$10), and pick classic gold, tonal or contrast white thread. A monogram inside the waistband is +$10.
New to made-to-measure? Straight is a good first pair: there's no taper to second-guess. Once it fits, every reorder uses the same pattern, in any denim or wash. Long legs are covered too, with inseams up to 40" on our tall men's jeans page.
When not to choose straight

You want a narrow ankle for clean sneakers.
Try Slim instead
Your thighs are big for your waist and you'd like the leg to taper.
Try Athletic Taper instead
You wear tall western boots: the hem needs to open over the shaft.
Try Bootcut instead

We check your numbers before we cut
Copy your best-fitting jeans laid flat (easiest) or measure yourself with a soft tape. Height and weight are optional, as a cross-check.
Within 1 working day a pattern maker compares every measurement with the others and with your height and weight, and emails you before cutting if anything looks unusual.

Questions and answers
How should straight leg jeans fit?
Clean through the seat with no sag, comfortable in the thigh, and a leg that falls straight to a slight break over your shoe. Measure your inseam with your shoes on.
Do raw selvedge jeans shrink?
Raw, unwashed denim can shrink when it's first soaked or washed. Tell us in the notes for your tailor how you plan to wash yours, and we'll confirm the length before cutting.
Can I cuff straight leg jeans?
Yes. Choose the cuffed hem, or add an inch or two to your inseam and turn them up yourself. A chain-stitch hem (+$10) looks especially good turned up.
Are straight jeans good for big thighs?
They give more room than slim. For thigh room with a narrower ankle, try athletic taper jeans; for room everywhere, try relaxed.
What's the difference between slim and straight jeans?
Straight keeps the same width from the knee to the hem; slim narrows below the knee. Straight is the more forgiving of the two, and the easier one to wear with boots.
