Woman wearing high-rise straight jeans in mid wash, waistband at the navel
November 5, 2026

The short answer

  • Rise is the distance from the crotch seam up to the top of the waistband. It decides where the waistband lands on your torso.
  • Low, mid, high and ultra high are not standardised. Treat the label as a hint and trust the measured inches.
  • Rise tends to grow with waist size, so a mid rise in a large size can sit like a high rise in a small one.
  • Mid rise sits below the navel and is easy to wear. High rise sits near or above the navel and gives more coverage and a longer-looking leg.

Waist and inseam get all the attention. Rise is the third number, and it quietly decides whether jeans stay up when you sit, whether a shirt tucks cleanly, and whether a size 28 feels like a 28. Here's what it is and how to choose.

What rise means

Rise is measured on a flat pair of jeans, from the crotch seam (where the four seams meet) straight up to the top of the waistband. That's the front rise. The back rise is longer, because it has to travel over your seat. Our post on front rise vs back rise covers the difference.

Low, mid, high and ultra high

RiseWhere the waistband landsTypical flat front rise*
LowOn the hips, well below the navelAbout 8 to 9.5 in
MidJust below the navelAbout 9.5 to 11 in
HighAt or near the navel, close to the natural waistAbout 11 to 13 in
Ultra highAbove the navelHigher than a high rise; no agreed figure

*One published guide's rough ranges for men's and unisex jeans (Japanese Workwear). Other guides draw the mid and high line nearer 10 to 10.5 inches (Types of Jean Fits). The guide's own advice: treat labels as hints and trust the measured inches.

Mid rise vs high rise

  • Choose mid rise if you like the waistband below your navel, want the easiest everyday fit, or find high waistbands press when you sit.
  • Choose high rise if you want a waistband near your natural waist, more coverage when you bend, a clean tuck, or a longer-looking leg.
  • Be careful with high rise if you have a short torso: the waistband can reach your ribs and dig in when you sit.

There's no best rise. There's the one that lands where your body is comfortable. If you're unsure, find the pair you reach for most and note where its waistband sits. See also low-rise jeans in 2026.

Why the same label can mean different inches

"Mid" is a word, not a unit. Brands set their own ranges, and many increase the rise as the waist size goes up, so a mid rise in a larger size can measure closer to a high rise in a smaller one (same guide). Waistband shape and denim weight change how a measured rise feels, too. So compare numbers to a pair you already know: lay it flat and measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband.

Rise and waist: a catch

Higher rises put the waistband on a different part of your body, so the waist measurement should be taken there. A waist measured at your natural waist will not match the number for a low-rise pair. We explain how in how to measure your waist for jeans.

How we handle rise

For women, the rise options run from low to ultra high depending on the style, and the style page shows which rises are offered. On women's custom jeans you pick the rise you want and we cut the waistband to your waist at that rise. Front rise and back rise are optional measurements: add them if you've measured a favorite pair, and tell us in the notes for your tailor if you want the rise higher or lower than usual. Read the measuring guides for how, and see jeans measurements explained for the rest of the numbers. Your first pair in each fit is covered by the Fit Guarantee.

Questions

What is rise in jeans?

The distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, measured flat. It decides where the waistband lands on your body.

What is the difference between mid rise and high rise?

Mid rise sits just below the navel; high rise sits at or near it, closer to the natural waist. Brands differ, so compare the measured inches.

How many inches is a mid rise?

One guide puts it at about 9.5 to 11 inches; others draw the line nearer 9 to 10.5. There is no standard.

Is high rise or mid rise better?

Neither. Mid rise is easier for most everyday wear, while high rise gives more coverage and a longer-looking leg. Choose by where you like the waistband.

Why do my jeans fall down or dig in when I sit?

Often a rise problem: too short a back rise can drop at the back, and too high a waistband can press on your stomach. Check the back rise as well as the front.
