Man in skinny jeans next to a man in slim jeans, shown from the front

The short answer

  • Skinny is close from thigh to ankle. Slim is trim but leaves room to move.
  • In our men's cuts, slim is 1.5 inches wider than skinny at the thigh, the knee and the hem (22.5/15.5/14 vs 21/14/12.5).
  • That 1.5 inches matters most at the hem, because it decides whether the leg opening clears your heel and sits over a shoe.
  • Skinny works best with low shoes and stretch fabric. Slim is the easier everyday pair.
  • Brands use both words loosely, so compare the numbers, not the label.

Most guides describe skinny as "tight" and slim as "less tight." That is accurate and not very useful when you're deciding what to order. A better question is where the extra inch and a half shows up, and what it buys you.

The numbers, in inches

These are our finished-garment figures, measured around, for a men's 32" waist and a women's 28" waist. They describe our cuts only; other brands will differ, and a size changes them.

Measured aroundMen's skinnyMen's slimDifferenceWomen's skinny

Leg opening12.5141.510.5
Thigh to opening8.5 narrower8.5 narrowernone8.5 narrower

The last row is arithmetic on the figures above. A women's slim is not in this table because we don't cut one.

The last row is the interesting one. Both cuts narrow by the same amount from thigh to hem. The slim is just offset by 1.5 inches all the way down. So slim isn't a more tapered jean; it's the same shape, carried slightly wider.

Where the 1.5 inches shows up

  • Thigh: in a skinny, the fabric sits against the leg when you stand and pulls across the front when you sit or squat. A slim leaves a little air.
  • Knee: a skinny at 14 inches has little spare room to bend into. Slim gives you enough that stairs, a bike or crouching don't pull the thigh down.
  • Hem: at 12.5 inches around, a skinny usually wants some stretch to get over the heel comfortably and may ruck at the ankle if it's too long. At 14 the slim goes on and off more easily and sits over a low boot.

A quick way to check any pair you own

  1. Lay the jeans flat, zipped up, and measure straight across the thigh an inch below the crotch seam, then double it.
  2. Do the same at the knee and at the hem.
  3. Compare with the table. If your pair is close to 21/14/12.5, it's skinny. Near 22.5/15.5/14, it's slim.
  4. Sit down in them. If the thigh pulls tight or the waistband digs, the pair is too close for how you sit.

Our jeans measurements explained guide shows where each of these is taken.

If you have larger thighs or calves, the skinny is where problems appear first; see signs your jeans are too tight. To decide whether skinny is still worth wearing, read are skinny jeans still in style.

When neither is right

  • Your thighs are the part that fights every pair: look at a fit with more thigh room.
  • You want the leg to stay the same width to the hem: that's a straight leg.
  • You wear heavy boots daily: both will crowd the shaft.

Questions

Is slim fit the same as skinny?

No. In our men's cuts the slim is 1.5 inches wider than the skinny at the thigh, knee and hem. They share a shape, but the slim leaves room to move.

Are slim jeans tight?

Trim, not tight. Slim should follow the leg without pulling when you sit or climb stairs. If it pulls, it's too small or not the right fit for your thighs.

Should I choose slim or skinny if I'm between sizes?

Slim. The extra 1.5 inches is the margin that stops a pair from straining at the thigh, and it's easier to wear with different shoes.

Do skinny jeans need stretch?

Usually. A close cut with no give is hard to sit in and to get over the heel. Check the fabric before you choose the fit.

Why does my slim feel like someone else's skinny?

Brands don't share definitions. Compare thigh, knee and hem measurements rather than the name.
