The short answer
- There is no single postpartum body, and no schedule to meet. Buy for how you feel now, not for a future size.
- Look for a soft, wide waistband and a rise that does not press where you are tender.
- A maternity panel can still be comfortable after birth, because it gives you room without a hard edge at the waist.
- Measure again every time things change. A pair that fits today may not fit in a few months, and that is normal.
After having a baby, your body may be a different shape from the one your jeans were made for, and it may keep changing for a while. That varies a lot between people, and it is not a problem to solve. This guide is about clothes only: what to look for so that jeans feel comfortable now, and what to do when you need to shop again. It is not medical advice. If you have questions about your body or recovery, your care provider is the person to ask.
What can change, in general terms
Bodies change in different ways after birth. Common things people mention are a different relationship between waist and hips, a softer or tender middle, a changed ribcage or bust (especially when feeding), and a seat or thigh that is fuller or smaller than before. Some changes settle; some stay; some come and go. Because of that, a waist number from your old jeans is a starting point at best.

What to look for in the waistband
- Soft and wide. A narrow, firm waistband can dig in when your middle feels tender or different.
- Stretch. A fabric with some give, such as our 11 oz Comfort Stretch or 10 oz Power Stretch, moves with you more than a rigid denim.
- Easy closures. Zip is quick; button fly is more fiddly. Choose whichever you find easy at 3 a.m.
- No hard pressure on a healing area. If you had surgery, follow your care provider's guidance on what is safe to wear over a scar, and choose the waistband position to suit.
What to look for in the rise
| Rise | How it can feel | Worth considering if |
|---|---|---|
| Low | The waistband sits below your middle | You want nothing pressing on the belly at all |
| Mid | Sits at or just below the navel | You want a neutral line and do not mind a firm waistband |
| High | Covers the middle with a smooth line | You like the support and coverage, and the band is soft |
| Over-the-bump panel | A stretch panel covers the middle | You want coverage without a seam or firm band |
| Under-the-bump panel | The panel sits below the belly | You want a lower line with give at the hips |
Rise is a matter of personal comfort. What rise means in jeans explains how it is measured.
When a maternity panel still helps
Many people keep wearing maternity-style jeans for a while, because the panel gives room and no hard waistband. Our maternity jeans have an over-the-bump or under-the-bump panel ($119). That is not a postpartum product, and we do not claim it is one, but it can be a comfortable choice if you want give at the waist. If you want a more conventional waistband, our Straight and Mom cuts have a traditional waist, with rises up to ultra-high for the Mom.
If there is something specific you would like adjusted, such as a softer waist position, a looser seat or more room through the hip, write it in the notes for your tailor. A pattern maker reads your notes before cutting.
Measure again, and measure kindly
There are two ways to give us measurements. The easiest is to lay your best-fitting jeans flat and measure them. Right now that might be a loose pair you like, which is fine, and we compare the numbers. The second is to measure your body (waist, hips or seat, thigh and inseam; height and weight are optional). The measuring guides show each step, and how to measure waist for jeans explains where the waist actually is, which can feel different now.
If your body changes again, measure again. Your Fit Guarantee covers the first pair in each fit: tell us within 30 days of delivery and we will remake it with corrected measurements or refund up to $25 for a local alteration.
How to shop for a changing body
- Buy for comfort today, not a size you hope to return to.
- Pick one or two pairs, not a full wardrobe. Needs change quickly.
- Choose a stretch fabric over rigid for now.
- Take the size label out of the equation: you can order any waist from 24" to 70" at the same price.
Questions
What jeans are best after having a baby?
Whichever feel comfortable. A soft, wide waistband, some stretch in the fabric and a rise that sits where you like it are the things to look for.
Can I wear maternity jeans after the baby is born?
Many people do, because the stretch panel gives room without a firm waistband. It is a comfort choice, and there is no rule either way.
Should I buy a bigger size?
Buy for how your body is now. With made-to-measure jeans, you are not choosing a size; you are giving measurements, and you can measure again later.
What if I had surgery?
Follow your care provider's guidance on pressure over a healing scar, and choose a waistband and rise that fit that advice.
