The short answer
- A men's tag such as 34 × 32 means a 34-inch waist and a 32-inch inseam. The first number is the waist, the second is the length.
- The waist number is a label, not always a tape-measure fact. Many brands run a little larger or smaller than the printed number.
- Inseam is the more reliable number, but it is only the inside leg: it says nothing about thigh, seat or rise.
- Height-to-inseam charts are guesses. A pair you already like, measured flat, is a better starting point.
Men's jeans sizing looks easy: two numbers and you're done. That's why it is annoying when a 34 fits one pair and gapes in the next. Here's what the tag actually says, a typical table to compare against, and where the system breaks down.
How to read a men's jeans tag
Men's jeans are normally sized by waist and inseam in inches, written waist × inseam. A 32 × 34 is a 32-inch waist and a 34-inch inseam (Kiwisizing describes the same format, with waists typically 28 to 36 and inseams usually 30, 32 or 34). Women's tags work differently; see our women's jeans size chart.
- Waist: the measurement around the waistband.
- Inseam: from the crotch seam down the inside of the leg to the hem. Not the outseam, which runs down the side.
- Not on the tag: rise, thigh, knee and leg opening, which decide the cut.
A typical waist and seat table
Levi's Australia publishes a chart where the waist size equals the waist in inches and the seat (hip) is 6.5 inches more (Levi's Australia men's bottoms chart). It shows the common relationship between waist and seat.
| Waist size | Waist (in) | Seat (in) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 30 | 36.5 |
| 32 | 32 | 38.5 |
| 34 | 34 | 40.5 |
| 36 | 36 | 42.5 |
| 38 | 38 | 44.5 |
| 40 | 40 | 46.5 |
One brand's chart, shown as an example. It assumes a certain build: your seat can sit above or below this, which is why the same waist can feel snug or loose in the same cut.

Inseam by height: a rough guide only
The same Levi's Australia page suggests an inseam by height: 28 for 5'1" and shorter, 30 for 5'2" to 5'3", 32 for 5'4" to 5'7" and 34 for 5'8" and taller. That is one brand's mapping, and it only covers the lengths the brand sells. Other charts differ, because legs and torsos don't scale together. Our inseam by height chart explains why, and how to measure your inseam shows how to find yours.
Vanity sizing and the waist you can't trust
Vanity sizing means a garment is labelled smaller than it measures. It is well documented in women's clothing, where studies have found nominal sizes growing over decades (Wikipedia), and in practice a men's pair marked 34 can measure a little over or under. A pair of stretch jeans can also feel a size smaller than a rigid one. The way to catch it is to lay your best-fitting jeans flat and measure them (see how to measure your waist for jeans), then compare that number with the brand's garment measurements, not the label.
What the tag can't tell you
| You notice | The tag missed |
|---|---|
| Waist fits, thighs are tight | Thigh measurement. Common with athletic builds. See jeans for athletic thighs. |
| Waist fits, waistband gaps at the back | Back rise and seat shape |
| Length is right in boots, too long in sneakers | The shoe you measured for |
| You're past a 40 waist or a 36 inseam | Many shops stop their ranges. See big and tall custom jeans. |
When you outgrow the system
We don't use a size run. Men's custom jeans are cut to your measurements from $109 ($119 for the Athletic Taper): waist 24" to 70" and inseam up to 40", at the same price in every size. Give us your best-fitting pair measured flat, or measure your body; height and weight are optional. Anything the tag can't say goes in the notes for your tailor, for example "1 inch longer, more room in the thigh". Your first pair in each fit is covered by the Fit Guarantee.
Questions
What does 32 × 34 mean in jeans?
A 32-inch waist and a 34-inch inseam. The first number is the waist, the second is the inside leg length, both in inches.
How do I know what size jeans I wear?
Measure a pair that fits well, laid flat: double the waistband and measure the inseam. Compare with the brand's garment measurements rather than your tape-measured body waist.
Is waist size the same as jeans size?
Roughly. The tag waist is a label and brands cut a little over or under it, so the waistband you measure may not equal the number printed.
What inseam do I need for my height?
One brand suggests 32 for 5'4" to 5'7" and 34 for 5'8" and taller. Height is a first guess only; your leg and your shoes decide the final number.
Do men's and women's jeans sizes match?
No. Men's tags give waist by inseam in inches; women's tags use numeric or waist-label systems. Do not compare the numbers directly.
