Why "big" sizes rarely fit big men

A big size is usually a regular pattern made bigger in every direction at once. Bodies don't grow that way: one man carries it in his belly, another in his seat and thighs. Graded-up patterns also tend to keep a rise that's short for the body, so the back gaps when you sit and the front presses on your stomach.

We start from your numbers instead: the waist where you want the waistband, your seat, thigh and inseam, and, if you have them, your front and back rise.

        Where to measure your waist

Keep the tape snug but not tight, and level at the back. Our measuring guides show each point.

          Rise

Choose low, mid or high, and add your front and back rise. If the back always gaps when you sit, tell us in the notes for your tailor.

          Seat

Measured on its own, so a full seat gets room without the waist growing with it.

          Thighs

Cut from your thigh number, not guessed from the waist. Choose Roomy if you want more.

          Length

Inseams up to 40" at no extra cost, on any waist from 24" to 70".

Fabric for comfort and long wear

The inner thigh takes the most wear on any pair of jeans. Classic Rigid (13 oz, 100% cotton) is the sturdiest-feeling cloth and breaks in over time; Comfort Stretch (11 oz, 2% elastane) is easier from day one. Thigh room cut to your measurement also means the denim isn't stretched tight where your legs meet.

Choose Relaxed for the most room, Straight for a cleaner line, or Bootcut if you wear boots. US import duties are included in the price; see shipping.

Where to measure for big and tall

Tap a number. A soft tape and five minutes is all it takes. Full method in the measuring guide.

        Jeans with numbered measuring points
        1. Waist Where you wear your waistband, tape level all the way round.
        2. Seat Around the fullest part of your seat, feet together.
        3. Thigh Around the fullest part of one thigh, just below the crotch.
        4. Inseam From the crotch down the inside leg to where you want the hem, in the shoes you'll wear.

We check your numbers before we cut

Copy your best-fitting jeans laid flat (easiest) or measure yourself with a soft tape. Height and weight are optional, as a cross-check.

Within 1 working day a pattern maker compares every measurement with the others and with your height and weight, and emails you before cutting if anything looks unusual.

        Questions and answers

What's the biggest waist you make?

70". Every waist from 24" to 70" is cut to your measurements, at the same price.

Do big and tall sizes cost more?

No. A 60" waist with a 36" inseam costs the same as any other pair: from $109.

What's the difference between big and tall and tall?

Tall is about length. Big and tall adds girth in the waist, seat and thigh. We cut both to your numbers, so pick the page that matches your main problem.

Which fit is best for big and tall men?

Relaxed for the most room in the seat and thigh, Straight for a cleaner classic line, Bootcut if you wear boots.

Do you make men's jeans with an elastic waist?

No. Our men's jeans have a regular waistband with a zip or button fly, cut to sit exactly where you measured. Choosing a higher rise is the usual way to get more comfort at the front.
