How to Dry Jeans: Air Dry, Dryer and Quick Tricks

The short answer

  • Air drying keeps the color, shape and size. Hang the jeans inside out, away from direct sun and heaters.
  • The dryer is the main reason jeans shrink and fade. If you must use it, go low heat and take them out slightly damp.
  • Stretch denim hates high heat: the elastane degrades and the jeans lose their recovery.
  • Smooth the seams while damp so the jeans dry flat, and expect heavy denim to take a day or more.

Washing gets the headlines, but drying does as much damage. Heat is what shrinks cotton, and tumbling is what wears away color. Our post on whether jeans shrink explains the mechanism. This one covers what to do about it. If you are not sure how often to wash at all, see how often to wash jeans.

Air drying: the default

  1. Shake and smooth. Pull the legs straight, flatten the pockets and tug the seams while damp. Wrinkles set as the fabric dries.
  2. Turn them inside out. This protects the dyed surface from sun and wear.
  3. Hang them by the waistband with clip hangers, or fold them over a rail or a line, if you want the legs to hang straight. Drying over a rail can leave a crease line, so some people clip by the hem instead.
  4. Choose shade and airflow. Direct sun fades indigo, and a hot radiator can dry unevenly and stress the fabric.

Heavy denim often takes a day or more to dry fully, especially at the waistband and pockets, which are thickest. Check there before you put the pair on.

Levi Strauss notes that a hot wash followed by a hot dryer will shrink jeans well (Levi Strauss on shrinking jeans), which is why people who don't want that avoid high heat.

If you do use the dryer

  • Use the lowest heat setting.
  • Turn the jeans inside out and zip the fly so the teeth don't snag.
  • Take them out while they are still slightly damp and finish them on a hanger.
  • Dry heavy denim separately. A towel or a few pairs together slows everything.

For jeans with elastane, skip high heat completely. Repeated heat degrades the stretch fiber and the jeans bag out sooner.

How to dry jeans faster

  1. Spin them an extra cycle in the washer. Less water means less time.
  2. Roll the jeans in a dry towel and press out moisture. Do not twist them.
  3. Hang them in a warm room with a fan blowing across them, not on top of a heater.
  4. Finish for 10 to 15 minutes in the dryer on low, then hang.
  5. Open the waistband and pockets and turn them out, since the pockets dry last.

Keeping the shape and the size

Measure the waist, inseam and thigh flat before the wash and again when the jeans are dry. If you want to shrink them on purpose, our how-to-shrink guide covers it. If you have a pair that has come out smaller and you want it back, putting them on while slightly damp and moving around often relaxes cotton. Damp denim should never be forced.

The easiest way to avoid dryer damage is to wash less. Colors fade and fibers wear with every cycle, so the fewer cycles the better. Our guide to washing jeans without fading covers the washing half of this.

If you have jeans in a rigid or raw denim, the dryer is even riskier, because there is more shrink in the cloth. For made-to-measure pairs, such as our men's straight jeans, we suggest the same routine: wash cold, air dry, and check the care label.

Questions

Is it OK to put jeans in the dryer?

It is fine occasionally, but heat shrinks cotton and fades color. Use low heat and remove them while slightly damp.

How long does it take jeans to air dry?

Heavy denim can take a day or longer, depending on the room and airflow. The waistband and pockets dry last.

Should I hang jeans by the waistband or the hem?

Either works. Clip hangers on the waistband let the legs hang straight. Hanging over a rail can leave a crease line.

Can I dry jeans in the sun?

You can, but sun fades indigo and black. If you do, turn them inside out and choose shade or a short time.

Why do jeans feel tight after the dryer?

Heat can shrink cotton and make stretch fibers snap back. They often relax after you wear them for a while.
